Panasonic launches eneloop rechargeable
Panasonic Launches New eneloop Rechargeable Batteries: nickel-metal hydride batteries which can be used immediately even five years after their previous charge*1 like dry battery
Panasonic Energy Europe NV will sell eneloop rechargeable batteries under the Panasonic brand from April 2014. The new product lineup will feature three different types – an eneloop standard model, "eneloop pro" high-end model, and "eneloop lite" entry model. Thanks to improvements to the materials used for the positive electrodes, the new eneloop standard model can be recharged up to 2,100 times*2, making it one of the most reusable batteries in the industry*3.
eneloop is a rechargeable battery built on the concept of " For a Sustainable Lifestyle ". It combines the reusable qualities of a rechargeable battery with dry battery qualities which is immediate usability after purchase or long-term storage. All batteries will naturally self-discharge, meaning that the amount of energy stored within will gradually decrease, but eneloop offers significantly improved resistance to this self-discharge to provide similar levels of convenience to dry batteries. A charged eneloop battery can be left for up to five years – an industry leading*4 – and still be used afterwards without the need for a further charge.
eneloop was first launched in Japan in November 2005. The series has been expanded ever since, with technological innovations leading to ever improved performance. Today, the batteries are on sale in over 60 different countries worldwide, with cumulative unit shipments having passed the 300 million mark (as of March 2014).
The concept and design of the eneloop batteries have been highly praised and earned a number of different awards – including a "Good Design Award – Gold Award" in Japan (2006), an "iF Design Award – Gold Award" in Germany (2008), an "IDEA Award" in the United States (2008), an "Australian International Design Award" (2009), and a "Design for Asia Award" (2010). Panasonic user satisfaction surveys have shown that more than 95% of users*5 are satisfied with the products in the United States, Germany, Thailand, and China.
*1 eneloop and "eneloop lite" will retain approximately 70% of maximum energy level after five years of self-discharge at room temperature (20°C) following a full charge. Excludes "eneloop pro".
*2 Estimated lifespan based on IEC61951-2 (7.5.1.3) testing conditions. Battery lifespan may vary and batteries may not be usable depending on storage conditions and devices.
*3 For AA-size batteries of 2,000 mAh capacity as of March 2014. Panasonic survey.
*4 For AA-size batteries of 1,000-2,000 mAh capacity as of March 2014. Panasonic survey.
*5 Panasonic online survey of eneloop customers conducted in October 2013.

About Panasonic Energy Europe
Panasonic Energy Europe NV is an organization 100% dedicated to batteries.
The European headquarter is located in Belgium (Brussels). Next to that the company has an extensive network of sales offices and distributors in more than 30 European countries.
The company has factories in Belgium (Tessenderlo) and Poland (Gniezno), which produce more than a billion batteries each year. These two European production sites, together with the two distribution centres in Belgium and in Poland, ensure a full European coverage.
Batteries can be used immediately after purchase or up to an industry-leading*4 five years after previous charge*1, thanks to resistance to self-discharge.
All batteries will naturally self-discharge, meaning that the amount of energy stored within will gradually decrease. Nickel hydride batteries and other conventional rechargeable batteries tend to demonstrate faster self-discharge than dry batteries, causing inconvenience to the user as the batteries need to be charged before they can be used after purchase, and cannot be used when needed after a period of storage. However, eneloop offers significantly improved resistance to this self-discharge to provide immediate usability after purchase or long-term storage – thereby offering similar levels of convenience to dry batteries. Following a full charge, the batteries will retain approximately 70%*6 of their maximum energy level after five years of self-discharge, making them perfectly suited both for everyday use and for emergencies.
*6 Estimated energy level with self-discharge during storage at room temperature (20°C) under IEC61951-2 (7.3.2) testing conditions following a full charge.
Realized an industry-leading*3cycle life in the industry, which makes eneloop the most reusable, thanks to improvements to materials used for positive electrodes
Thanks to improvements to the materials used for the positive electrodes, the new eneloop standard model (AA-size, AAA-size) can be recharged up to 2,100 times, a 16% improvement on the previous models (HR-3UTGB, HR-4UTGB: Approx. 1,800 recharges*2). This makes it one of the most reusable batteries in the industry*3 for an AA-size and AAA-size standard model.
Meanwhile, the "eneloop lite" entry model can be recharged approximately 3,000 times*2, a 50% improvement on the previous models (HR-3UQ, HR-4UQ: Approx. 2,000 recharges*2).
Improved repeated recharge technology * For standard model
Improvements to the conductive layer of the positive electrode active material surface, made chiefly from nickel hydride, have allowed for greater conductivity and durability. By limiting the degradation of the conductive layer, it has been possible to reduce performance degradation during repeated use and thus increase the number of times the battery may be recharged – all without increasing the amount of negative electrode alloy used.
Lineup features three different types: standard, high-end, and entry
Three different models – an eneloop standard model, "eneloop pro" high-end model, and "eneloop lite" entry model – will now be developed under the Panasonic brand. The high-capacity rechargeable battery previously marketed as "XX (double X)" will now be relabeled as "eneloop pro". The standard eneloop model demonstrates little self-discharge and can be used with all manner of equipment. The high-capacity "eneloop pro" is suited for heavy users and equipment consuming a lot of energy. Finally, the "eneloop lite" is designed for equipment that do not consume much energy, and/or equipment that require particularly frequent charging.
A unified, elegant design has been used for all three models to help promote their global development.
